A few hours of work with fractal world viewer and fractal mapper and this is what I have as a first look at the world I am using for my first campaign setting. Has nothing but geological data at this point. Not even vegitation. Its brown to gray for altitudes and the yellow and whites mark deserts and glaciers.
This is the largest continent in the world. The planet is called Auqora's Jewel, and the continent here is the Shield Plate. The main super-power in the world claims everything visible in this image as theirs. Doesn't mean they control it all, but they do claim it all... Really, they haven't even mapped it all, but that is sometimes the way of great empires. In this case, the super-power in charge could best be compared to D&D meets Rome in flavor. Called the Clashland Alliance but really run as a Imperical Republic, the empire's alignment is lawful neutral. The empire's capital is a little right and below the exact center of the image, on the coast the huge inlet sea. I'll post more images as I work on the world map, but this is largest image I expect anyone will see for a while.. I will be working on regions of this map, starting around the Clashland Alliance's capital, and working out from there. Some of the stuff I will be posting freely available through this site, but most of it I expect to take enough work to put down in writing that it will be released like most large settings do, as a series of setting books with the initial campaign book just covering the first major chunk in rough.
Since I am talking about books I plan to publish, I'll take this moment to sneak in a comment on the methods I am looking at using. First, as mentionned in the last post, I do plan to make them available first and foremost as ebooks. I'll be doing this through Kindle on Amazon, but it doesn't mean they will be the only source. I plan to price ebooks affordably, as they don't have a high per-unit cost, any way you look at it. I will also make them available in printed form though. I haven't settled on even a narrow selection of publishing sites yet, but of the ones I have narrowed it down to, it's pretty certain that the copies I will be able to offer won't be in hardcover. They will also mostly be printed on demand, as ordered from online sources. I'll work out special deals for printing on orders from folks that already have registered copies of the ebooks. Deals like barely over my cost to print them. In the end, I'll try to get it just marginally over the cost of buying just a printed copy to get an ebook version and 1 published softcover printing of it, and having been tight on funds most of my life, I'll be trying to keep the costs of all versions down. I really hope to have a world that can sell in volume because of popularity and to keep all my overhead and costs low.
That pretty much wraps up this post, and I'd expect them more regularly for the near future. I'm on a roll right now, though I've done enough mapwork for the day. Laying out rivers is what took longest so far.
